NOTE: See the 5th post in this thread for a better cross-reference than this one.

Wyeast / White Labs Comparisons
Similar strains

Often people ask for a comparison chart between Wyeast and White Labs strains. Here is one chart that has been floating around for a while. It shows strains that are similar -- most are not exactly the same, but you'll get similar results with the substitutions shown.

Happy Brewing!

Note that this cross-reference was taken as-is from elsewhere on the internet and neither AB/HBA nor the Brewboard Moderating Team make any claims to its authenticity. In fact, there are some questionable substitutions listed. In particular:
  • WLP500 is listed as a substitute for 3787. 3787 is the Westmalle yeast and is considerably less fruity and more phenolic than WLP500, which is the Chimay yeast strain.
  • Similarly, WLP550 is listed as the cross-reference for 1214. 1214 is the Chimay yeast and should be cross-referenced to WLP500, not WLP550.
  • WLP530 probably should be the cross-reference for 3787.
  • WLP540 is the Rochefort strain and should be the cross-reference for 1762.
  • WLP550 is the Achouffe yeast and should be the cross-reference for 3522.
  • WLP400 is cross-referenced to 3942 and WLP410 is cross-referenced to 3944. In fact, 3944 and WLP400 are the Celis/Hoegaarden witbier strain and should be cross-referenced to one another. It is unknown whether WLP410 should be cross-referenced to 3942.
  • It is very questionable that WLP720 is the same yeast as 3463.
  • WLP800 should not be listed as a cross-reference to 2007 but that should be WLP840 instead.
  • WLP802 is shown as the nearest equivalent to 2278. That should actually be WLP800.
  • WLP840 is the stated equivalent for 2272 but there is no suitable cross-reference in the White Labs inventory.
  • Also, regarding commercial equivalents for these yeasts, it has been widely believed that 1010 was the same yeast as WLP320, which is in fact the Uerige altbier yeast. Recent evidence has surfaced that 1010 is in fact a Kφlsch yeast and not the same as WLP320 at all. WLP320 may be the Uerige strain but it appears that 1010 is not.
Note that the following commercial equivalents are probably accurate: 1388 = WLP570 = Duvel, WLP510 = Orval, 3864 = Unibroue and 3538 = Corsendonk-Bocq.

If other discrepancies are found in this cross-reference chart, please notify one of the moderators so that additions to this errata list can be made.

Special thanks to Stuster for helping me with these cross-references.

In the spring of 2006, Wyeast announced that they were discontinuing several strains of yeast. These strains are not discontinued in the sense that they will never again be produced but they will be changed to limited availability seasonal offerings. There is no schedule for these releases but will be whenever Wyeast "feels like it". The following should give you a pretty good idea of what yeasts to use in place of the discontinued strains.

Discontinued —> Substitution
2002 Gambrinus —> 2000 Budvar
2247 European Lager —> 2042 Danish
2272 North American Lager —> 2035 American Lager
3763 Roeselare (on the current VSS list) —> 3278 Lambic
1026 British Cask Ale —> 1968 London ESB
3538 Leuven Pale Ale —> 3787 Trappist High Gravity
1882 Thames Valley II —> 1968 London ESB
3864 Canadian/Belgian Style (nearly certain to be on the next VSS list) —> 3787 Trappist High Gravity
3725 Biere de Garde (on the current VSS list) —> 3522 Ardennes
3726 Farmhouse Ale —> 3724 Saison
1768 English Special Bitter —> 1968 London ESB
3822 Dutch Castle —> 3463 Forbidden Fruit/3522 Ardennes

erichonour brought it to my attention that Jamil has created a cross reference that is quite a bit more accurate than the one posted above. I would consider this reference definitive. Here is the link. Thanks to Eric for sending me the link and also to Jamil for making this resource available. Also credit goes to Kris England for compiling the chart in the first place.
